Matthew Berrettini revealed in the Netflix tennis documentary that his family was not really rich and that there was a time when they feared that he would not be able to make a living from tennis. Berrettini, 26, is one of the best players of his generation, as he is a Grand Slam finalist and has been ranked No. 6 in the world.
Reflecting on his tennis journey at Break Point, Berrettini admitted that he «wasn’t supposed to become this tennis star.» «Tennis is in my DNA because my whole family plays. But I wasn’t supposed to become a top 10 tennis player.»
I wasn’t that good. He didn’t have much strength. He was just tall and skinny. Like a giraffe or something. My parents were afraid that I wouldn’t be able to make a living from tennis, and obviously we weren’t rich. They were like, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ I remember saying to them, ‘Yes, I want to do this.’
What they told me is: ‘All we want is for you to put 100% into what you’re doing.’ So it means that when I get on the court, I push myself to the limit every time,» Berrettini revealed on the second episode of Break Point.
Berrettini certainly did his family proud.
Berrettini, who turned pro in 2015, has certainly done his family proud. Eight years after turning professional, Berrettini has seven titles to his credit and for the past several years has been considered among the best players in the game.
Additionally, Berrettini has earned a total of $10,794,890 in prize money so far in his career, according to the ATP website. Berrettini, who will turn 27 in April, has just entered his prime. Berrettini has a great game and it is not a secret that one of his biggest goals is to become a Grand Slam champion.
When Berrettini retires, he will most likely go down in history as one of the greatest players in Italian tennis history.
