Alize Cornet Reacts To Ousting Emma Raducanu At Us Open

Alize Cornet reacts to Emma Raducanu’s expulsion at the US Open

Alize Cornet described herself as «the annoying girl» after finishing Emma Raducanu’s US Open title defense and said she was just trying to put on a show for the New York crowd. On Tuesday, the 40th-ranked Cornet ended his US Open title defense.

Earlier in the season, Cornet stunned Simona Halep at the Australian Open. Two months ago, Cornet ended Iga Swiatek’s streak of 37 consecutive matches after beating the Pole at Wimbledon. After beating Raducanu, Cornet called the 19-year-old «a very good player» and insisted she did not become a Grand Slam champion by coincidence.

«I think I played a pretty solid game,» Cornet said. «I had to do it because Emma is such a good player. She didn’t win a Slam for nothing. I know how she can play. She was ready for tonight. I’m kind of an annoying girl this year.»

I know people were very supportive of Emma, but I was really trying to put on a show and take them with me. In the end it worked. I just hope they support me in the second round.»

Cornet ousted Raducanu in straight sets

Cornet was broken in the first game of the match, but Raducanu broke again in the second game.

In game six, Cornet broke Raducanu for a 4-2 lead, but the Brit immediately broke again in the next game. In game eight, Cornet earned her third break of the set to open a 5-3 lead. Cornet then served for the first set in the next game.

After losing the first set, Raducanu had a 3-1 lead in the second set. Down by one break, Cornet responded with three straight breaks and won five games in a row to complete a straight-set victory. Cornet plays Katerina Siniakova in the second round of the US Open.
