on september 3Ajla Tomljanovic ended Serena Williams’ career by playing one of her best matches at the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Australian tennis player finished the match with a score of 7-5, (4) 6-7, 6-1 and has shown that she can compete at a high level even in Grand Slam tournaments.
This year, thanks to some big wins, Tomljanovic won the quarterfinals at both the US Open and Wimbledon. On the pitch of the All England Club she had to surrender to Elena Rybakina, who would later win her first major; while she was at Flushing Meadows, Ons Jabeur stopped her.
Ajla Tomljanovic: «Sometimes you feel alone»
The tennis player born in 1993 spoke about her origins and the world of tennis. She said: «I was born in Croatia. My parents are Croatian, we have that joy of having lived there, that fighting spirit.
We love to joke around. In this sense it is a people similar to the Australian, they understand fun and know how to joke with others. Australians are always in a good mood, they love to party, they are sociable, friendly and very open. The food is fantastic, I love breakfast with coffee.
The Australian way of life suits me better even though I live in Florida at the moment. Traveling the Tour? My father tries to travel with me whenever he can. My mom is pretty busy this season, so she can’t be very present.
There are many moments in this sport when you feel alone. I wish there were more emotions in tennis, more space to express yourself. In recent years tennis has become very serious, I understand that it is a gentleman’s sport.
However, I think it would be nice to have the opportunity to show our emotions during matches without having to be fined.»
