Annette Kontavet has announced her retirement from tennis.

Annette Kontaveit will retire from tennis after Wimbledon 2023.

Like a blue bolt, the Estonian tennis player took to her social media to share her painful decision, which she made after a long ordeal due to physical problems in recent months.

The Tallinn native has won six WTA titles out of fifteen finals in her career.

Her best finish in a Grand Slam tournament is the quarterfinals of the 2020 Australian Open. For her country, without a great tennis tradition, Annette was definitely a frontrunner, setting many records in her career, ranking 2nd in the WTA rankings in June 2022.

She also became the first tennis player from her country to qualify for the WTA Finals and reach the finals at the same time. Last year, her poor performance along with worsening back problems led her to make this difficult decision at the age of 27.

This is his heartwarming letter that he published on his Instagram channel: «Hello friends, today I announce that I am going to finish my career as a competitive athlete. After several medical visits and consultations with my medical colleagues, I was told that I have a lumbar disc degeneration in my back.

This does not allow me to train at full speed or continue racing. Therefore, it is not possible to continue at a high level in such a high competition. Tennis has taught me so much, for which I am very grateful.

It was important for me to be able to bring the Estonian flag to the tennis courts and play in front of my fans and admirers from all over the world. After my latest endeavor as a professional tennis player, I am ready for new challenges: to enjoy the game and compete as much as possible at Wimbledon. Thank you all for your continued support.»
