Shelby Rogers is an American professional tennis player, who has a career-high singles WTA ranking of No 43 achieved on April 26, 2021. She has won six singles titles and one doubles title on the ITF Circuit. Shelby Rogers won the Girls’ National Championship at 17. Her best results as a professional came at the 2016 French Open and the 2020 US Open where she reached the quarterfinals.
Shelby Rogers was born on October 13, 1992, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, United States. She was introduced to tennis at the age of six and started competing on the national stage by the age of eleven. She decided to forgo college and become a professional tennis player.
Shelby Rogers made her professional debut in 2009 at the $10,000 St Joseph, MO, reaching the third round. Later the same year she played into three more ITF tournaments with the biggest achievement being the semi-finals of the $10,000 Veracruz (Mexico).
In 2010, despite her young age, Shelby Rogers reached her first ITF final at the $50,000 W80 Indian Harbour Beach, FL, losing on the final from Edina Gallovits-Hall. The same year, she won the USTA National Championships for Girls 18.
In 2011, Shelby Rogers debuted in the WTA tour at Volvo Car Open in Charleston but lost in the first round. During the year, her biggest success was quarter-finals of the $50,000 Raleigh, NC and $50,000 Troy, AL.
Shelby Rogers won her first ITF trophy in 2012 at the $50,000 Yakima, WA. Later the same year she was runner-up at the $60,000 Las Vegas, NV. Thus, by the end of the year she climbed to her highest ranking of No 213.
The big breakthrough for Shelby Rogers came in 2013, when she won three ITF titles – $60,000 Charlottesville, VA, $50,000 W60 Lexington, KY, and $75,000 Albuquerque, NM. She also debuted in the Grand Slam’s tournaments, reaching the second round of French Open / Roland Garros. Following her good games, Shelby Rogers was close to reaching the Top 100.
In 2014, she focused on higher-rated tournaments. At the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open she reached the second round, while at the WTA 250 Nurnberger Gastein Ladies was a step away from the trophy but lost on the final from Andrea Petkovic. At the WTA 1000 Coupe Rogers in Montreal she reached the third round. This was enough to climb her to WTA No 72, which she kept by the end of the year.
Shelby Rogers had a terrible year in 2015 without significant success and falling into the world ranking. However, the next year, 2016, was the most successful for her. She reached the semi-finals of the $100,000 W100 Midland, MI and the final of the WTA 250 Rio Open presented by Claro (Brazil) in February. But in May 2016, Shelby Rogers made her most significant achievement – the quarter-finals of the French Open / Roland Garros. This rocketed her to the world Top 50, but by the end of the year, she slid to No 59.
In 2017, she reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Volvo Car Open in Charleston and the WTA 250 Internationaux de Strasbourg.
After battling a knee injury for some time, Shelby Rogers underwent knee surgery in May 2018. From the start of 2018, she played only at the Australian Open and Indian Wells Open but was knocked out in the first round at both tournaments. In the mid of next year, she returned to professional tennis. However, she was not in the form to make something remarkable at the WTA. In September 2019, she won $50,000 W60 Templeton, CA, while in October reached the final of the $80,000 W80 Macon, GA.
After several tournaments, she went into better form and won another ITF trophy in February 2020 at the $100,000 W100 Midland, MI. Later the same year, she reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Lexington Open, but her most remarkable success was the quarter-final of the US Open, which climbed her back to the world’s No 60.
In 2021, Shelby Rogers continues with her good games. She reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Melbourne Open, the fourth round of the Australian Open, and the quarter-final of the WTA 500 Adelaide International. These results, sent her into the Top 50.
