Australian tennis legend Todd Woodbridge believes Novak Djokovic is «the heavy favourite» to win the Australian Open title. While Djokovic was in Turin for the ATP Finals, he was informed by the Australian government that his three-year ban from entering the country had been revoked.
That being said, the record nine-time Australian Open champion Djokovic will return to Melbourne Park in 2023. Before Djokovic was denied participation in this year’s Australian Open, he captured three consecutive titles at Melbourne Park.
Many felt that if Djokovic had been allowed to play, he would have been the top seed for the title and likely won the 2022 Australian Open title.
Woodbridge over Djokovic at Melbourne Park: The heavy favorite
«I think that’s the best scenario for the tournament because we want the best players to play at the Australian Open.
what goes into it [Australian] Open in terms of development, prize money, what it does to our reputation around the world – we want the best to be allowed to come here and be allowed to play. Given the fact that Novak has won it nine times, he now comes in as a heavy favorite after he wasn’t allowed to play this year,» Woodbridge said on Wide World of Sports Radio.
Djokovic, who holds the record for the most weeks at number 1, is currently the fifth player in the world. Although Djokovic is no longer the best player in the world, Woodbridge feels that the Serb is still the best player in the world.
«In my opinion, this year’s rankings are so skewed. He [Djokovic] he is still the number 1 player in the world and to have him back is really important,» Woodbridge added. When Djokovic was asked about the news from Australia, he admitted he was relieved to receive such positive news. It remains to be seen if Djokovic will enjoy a strong return to Australia and will win a record tenth Australian Open title.
