Camila Giorgi triumphs in Mexico: here are her words
Camila Giorgi triumphed at the WTA 250 in Mérida by beating the Swedish Rebecca Peterson in the final: 7-6(3) 1-6 6-3 is the final result in favor of the Italian tennis player.
After her win in Mexico last week, Camila said: «I’m very happy to be here, especially since it’s my first time in Mexico. Really a surprise to be here, with this atmosphere, a fantastic week and what a final we played.» Rebeca!
I am very satisfied and thank you very much. Thanks to the crowd. I enjoyed staying here in Mexico for the first time and I really enjoyed it. I have known new habits, habits of this place, and I am very happy. Thank you! I dedicate this title to my father.» This is the fourth title of her career for Camila Giorgi.
The first two of her career are what currently classify as WTA 250 tournaments: ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2015, she won against Belinda Bencic: Linz in 2018, she won against Ekaterina Aleksandrova. First on grass, second on hard.
The second surface will be the one on which the Italian number two has been most successful. In August 2021 she triumphed in Montreal, at the WTA 1000 Canadian Open, defeating slam finalist Karolina Pliskova in straight sets.
After a year and a half, therefore, Giorgi returns to win a tournament. Her season will continue strong, like the rest of the WTA Tour. She is missing the second 1000 tournament of the season, Indian Wells, where the men’s and women’s tour will be the protagonists of the first American leg of the season, before the return of the US Open.
