Casper Ruud has lost the world number 2 spot and Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal are set to make history on Monday. Ruud, who rose to second place after his runner-up finish at the US Open, suffered an upset quarterfinal loss to Yoshihito Nishioka in the Seoul quarterfinals.
Following Ruud’s loss in Seoul, Nadal is set to overtake the Norwegian at No. 2 on Monday. When that happens, Alcaraz and Nadal will become the first two Spanish players to hold the top two positions simultaneously.

On Friday, 56th-ranked Nishioka defeated top seed Ruud 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the Seoul quarterfinals. Nishioka, who was easily defeated by Ruud when they met as the Madrid Masters 2021, took revenge against the Norwegian this Friday.
«I feel very good. My motivation is very high,» said Nishioka. «I’m playing very well, very smart. He’s a great player. I know he came from Europe and played in the Laver Cup, which are not easy games. He was not yet settled on this court or in this country, maybe.»

After easily losing the first set, Ruud faced pressure on his serve early in the match. the second set, but was able to save break points in the first and fifth games.
Ruud then secured his first break of the match in game six to take a 4-2 lead in the second set. Ruud routinely held on to his serve the rest of the set to send the match to a decider. In the third set, the two players were tied at two games each before Nishioka hit back-to-back breaks and won four games in a row to complete a shock victory over Ruud. Ruud is likely to drop to third place on Monday.
