Nick Kyrgios has apparently hit back at Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mother by accusing him of playing «dirty tennis» at Wimbledon. In the third round at Wimbledon, Kyrgios recovered from a set down to beat Tsitsipas in four sets.
The match was full of tension as Tsitsipas’s mother, Julia Apostoli, recently accused Kyrgios of playing dirty tennis and suggested it negatively affected her son. «The only person who confuses Stefanos is Nick Kyrgios,» Apostoli was quoted as saying by the Greek City Times.
“He is the only one who takes it out of himself. In the Wimbledon match, Kyrgios decided to ignore the general rules of the sport. The match got very weird and nervous because he was playing ‘dirty’ tennis.
Stefanos doesn’t play like that. He completely lost his temper over his opponent’s behavior and lost the match no worse off on the court.”
Kyrgios responds to Tsitsipas’ mother
On his Instagram story, Kyrgios reposted a video from that match with the caption: «Dirty Tennis.»
The point that Kyrgios re-posted was won by the Australian, who then proceeded to turn and bow to the crowd. After leaving Wimbledon, Tsitsipas unloaded on Kyrgios, calling him «an evil bully». «It’s constant bullying.
He was probably a bully at school. I don’t like bullies. He has a very evil side,» Tsitsipas said of Kyrgios after their Wimbledon match. Addressing those comments, Kyrgios seemed to be a bit stunned and shocked by Tsitsipas’s claims.
“I’m not sure how I bullied him. He was the one who hit me balls, hit a spectator. I didn’t do anything other than me going back and forth a little bit with the referee. I didn’t do anything to Stefanos today that was disrespectful, I don’t think so,» Kyrgios said in his response at the time. After beating Tsitsipas, Kyrgios reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon.
