Nick Kyrgios asked about his chances at the Australian Open

Nick Kyrgios says he’s doing all the right things to be an Australian Open title contender, but noted he’s not looking too far into the future. Kyrgios, who finished second to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, will be looking to win his first Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park in January.

Going into the Australian Open, Kyrgios is seen as someone who could definitely make a career out of Melbourne Park. «Nothing is guaranteed. I’m training well, enjoying it, mentally feeling good. That’s all that really matters.»

Whether I go in there and win the tournament or lose the first round, I’m the same person. I’m taking it day by day, I’m a day to day person. I’m not thinking about the future at all,» Kyrgios told AAP.

Kyrgios: Wimbledon is still my best chance

Before the 2022 grass season began, Kyrgios made it clear that his big goal was to make a run at Wimbledon.

In the end, Kyrgios had a great run at Wimbledon, but still failed to win the title. «Of course, out of the four (grand slams), Wimbledon has always been my first chance to win a slam. It’s still true that it’s my best chance, definitely the biggest and most important,» Kyrgios said.

Two months after Wimbledon, Kyrgios also had a great run at the US Open. In the round of 16 of the US Open, Kyrgios defeated defending champion Daniil Medvedev. After knocking out Medvedev, Kyrgios had a very favorable round of 16 matchup against Karen Khachanov.

Kyrgios failed to deliver against Khachanov as the Russian outlasted the Australian in five sets. After he finished the match, Kyrgios was extremely disappointed and visibly dejected. In his post-match press conference, Kyrgios said that Grand Slam tournaments are the ones that really count.

Now, Kyrgios has another chance to become a Grand Slam champion. Whether Kyrgios can deliver in front of his hometown fans this January remains to be seen.
