World number 1 Iga Swiatek witnessed a cute scene in Indian Wells that she will never forget when a couple got engaged in the middle of the Pole’s practice session. On Sunday, Swiatek was on the practice court with 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.
So, a guy in the stands proposed to his girlfriend. The girl said that she was, and the moment caught Swiatek’s attention. After the proposal, Swiatek posed with the couple and asked if he could attend their wedding. «Can I go to the wedding?» Swiatek joked after taking a selfie with the newly engaged couple.
Swiatek prepares to defend his Indian Wells title
Last year, Swiatek won her first Indian Wells title after beating Maria Sakkari in the final. This year, Swiatek is the top favorite to repeat as Indian Wells champion. In February, Swiatek won Doha before finishing as runners-up in Dubai.
Before the Sunshine Double, Swiatek urged her fans not to place unrealistic expectations on her. «Yesterday I was still in Dubai, today I am in Warsaw, soon in Indian Wells. These last few weeks have been intense and challenging, but we have made great work and progress.
I enjoyed the tournaments in Doha and Dubai and although I lost the final in Dubai (congratulations Barbora!) my level was good despite the infection and I gave everything I could at the moment. I can see that some of you have higher expectations of me, but hey.
I’m only human. I’ll keep my standards high, enjoy my time on tour and keep working hard. At the end of the day that’s all I can control. My effort and commitment. Thank you all for the support and see you soon!» Swiatek said in a message posted to his Twitter last Monday. It remains to be seen how well Swiatek can do in the desert this year.
