American tennis legend John McEnroe says that Venus Williams was the best thing that ever happened to Serena Williams. Serena and Venus have always had a very close relationship and have been nothing but strong support for each other.
In the early 2000s, Serena and Venus were considered the best couple to watch on the WTA Tour. Serena and Venus pushed each other to become better players, all while maintaining a close relationship and being there for each other.
«And Venus, I’ve said, has been the best thing that’s ever happened to her sister. She’s obviously an amazing player. And she’s got some varied interests as well. We don’t know that much.»
Venus has been pretty secretive for a long time. It’s hard to know where exactly it comes from. But I hope she’s in a good place and she deserves it,» McEnroe told ESPN.
McEnroe thinks Venus Williams could follow Serena into retirement
Serena plans to retire after this year’s US Open.
Venus hasn’t made any announcements, but some think she might as well call it a career once her US Open campaign is over. «I’d be surprised if she plays much longer,» McEnroe said. «In fact, I think she would stop playing at the same time as Serena.»
ESPN tennis pundit Chris Evert joined McEnroe in praising Venus. Evert said that Venus has always been very supportive of Serena. «I think, again, the Venus thing, it’s wonderful to see the support that she has given Serena.
He’s always in the stands when Serena plays big games. And she has always shown a lot of class and a lot of grace both off and on the court,» Evert said. In the first round of the US Open, Venus plays Alison van Uytvanck. On the other hand, Serena Williams plays Danka Kovinic.
