Jimmy Connors Congratulates Danielle Collins On Big Us Open Win Over Naomi Osaka

Jimmy Connors congratulates Danielle Collins on her big US Open win over Naomi Osaka

American tennis legend Jimmy Connors took a moment to congratulate his compatriot Danielle Collins for starting her US Open campaign with a smash win over four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. In the first round of the US Open, Collins eliminated Osaka with a score of 7-6(5) 6-3.

Osaka is a two-time champion at Flushing Meadows and one of the players that no top seed wanted to face. But Collins handled the business and sent Osaka packing out of New York. «Hey Danielle Collins way to go big win @USOpen thanks for the cheers all the best dad and always give it your all keep up the good work JC #winner,» Connors wrote on Twitter.

Collins finally gets a win over Osaka

When Collins and Osaka met in Beijing four years ago, the Japanese won their meeting with a dominant score of 6-1 6-0.

At Indian Wells 2019, Osaka earned another straight-set win over Collins. Earlier this year in Miami, Osaka dismantled Collins 6-2 6-1. After not winning a single set in her first three matches against Osaka, Collins finally beat the Japanese, and did so in straight sets.

Going into his US Open match, Collins knew what mistakes he needed to avoid this time. «I’ve lost to Naomi three times before, so before the match I had a lot of information about what she needed to improve on, areas where she could improve,» Collins said.

«I think I did those things and played pretty well overall. I got lucky in some big moments. But I was working really hard for the points. She wasn’t giving me a lot of free points.» In the second round of the US Open, Collins plays Cristina Bucsa.

Collins and Bucsa will meet head-to-head for the first time when they meet at the US Open. The 28-year-old Collins is aiming to reach the second week at Flushing Meadows for the first time in his career.
