Jack Draper suggests that it’s kind of funny that Serena Williams’ farewell party has basically already taken place even though she’s still alive at the US Open. On Monday night, the US Open broke its attendance record after 29,402 fans turned out to watch Williams’ first-round match against Danka Kovinic.
After the match, the US Open played a special video they prepared for Williams. The ceremony also featured Williams and WTA founder Billie Jean King addressing the crowd. Two days later, Williams returned to the court and beat second seed Anett Kontaveit.
Again, the US Open broke its attendance record as 29,959 fans turned out to watch Williams and Kontaveit’s match. «Yes, [I could hear] a little. I think they showed it on TV when he won. There was a great round of applause.
I think he beat seed 2 right? Obviously, it’s an incredible achievement,» Draper said. «I think it was weird, it seemed like just yesterday when almost everyone came to do this wrap party, and she went on and won two games.
I think it must be incredibly difficult for her to play her with the kind of support she’s getting in New York.»
Draper on Williams: An amazing athlete and an amazing career
The New York crowd is certainly doing its best to support Williams to the best of its ability during the American’s final tournament.
Draper admits that even the players feel all the hype for Williams’ latest US Open. «I was on one of the outside courts yesterday, it’s almost difficult to play because the noise was so loud. You felt everything vibrating.
What an incredible athlete, what an incredible race. Yeah, it must be really exciting to come here and watch her,» he added. While Williams was in action against Kontaveit, Draper was also playing her US Open second-round match.
On Wednesday, Draper notched one of the biggest wins of his career as he defeated eighth-ranked Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4 6-4 6-4.
