On Monday, qualifier Andreozzi nearly defeated two-time Grand Slam finalist Ruud.
Ruud, ranked No. 4 in the world, managed to fend off Andreozzi, beating the Argentine 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2). Many expected Ruud to have an easy job against Andreozzi, but the 342nd-ranked Argentine was not without a great fight.
Ruud survived Andreozzi’s challenge
Andreozzi started the match extremely well, breaking Ruud in the first game of the match. Ruud managed to win back the break in the fourth game, but Andreozzi broke the Norwegian again in the seventh game to open a 4-3 lead.
Down by a break, Ruud responded by claiming back-to-back breaks in the eighth and tenth games to reverse the deficit and win the opening set. After losing the first set, Andreozzi started the second set with an early break. Andreozzi was broken in the sixth game, but broke Ruud again in the ninth game, before serving for the second set in the next game.
The third set started like the previous two when Andreozzi broke Ruud in the first game of the second set. However, Ruud managed to break Andreozzi in the second game and the third set ended in a tie-break after no more breaks were seen.
In the tie-break, Ruud opened up a 6-1 lead before converting his second match point. After the match, Ruud admitted that Andreozzi gave him a very difficult contest. “In terms of confidence, I have felt better because it is my first game in five or six weeks.
You are wondering where your level is. Today was a bit up and down. I played good tennis, but I think Guido made it difficult for me. When you play with a player like him, it can be easier for him to play without pressure. He can feel free, let go,» Ruud said after the game.
