Frances Tiafoe, 24, attributes his success at the US Open to his change of heart, as he admits that a few years ago he would probably be happy to have the opportunity to play Rafael Nadal. On Monday, Tiafoe notched one of the biggest wins of her career as she defeated Nadal at the US Open 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
It was Tiafoe’s first win over Nadal. In 2019, Tiafoe suffered losses to Nadal at the Australian Open and the Madrid Masters. This time, Tiafoe entered the court determined to take Nadal out of New York and reach his first US Open quarterfinal.
The American then defeated Andrey Rublev in straight sets to secure a spot in the semi-finals. “A couple of years ago he would have played Rafa and said, ‘oh, that’s great to play him,’” Tiafoe explained.
«But today, when I came out, I looked at my team and said: ‘Let’s win today.'»
Tiafoe believes the game is in good hands
Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer did not participate in this year’s US Open, while Nadal suffered a loss in the round of 16.
But this year’s edition of the US Open is not without its excitement as Tiafoe feels the game is in good hands with the likes of Kyrgios, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. «I think Nick is playing great tennis and he is great at tennis,» Tiafoe said.
“You see him filling stadiums when he plays singles, doubles, whatever. Alcaraz is a great personality. [Jannik] Sinner. Myself. People get behind me. You know the American boys, Tommy [Paul], [Taylor] Fritz. There are a lot of guys playing very good tennis.
I don’t think it’s a Big Three. It will be like a Big 12. There are a lot of guys playing very good tennis. I think it’s okay. For sure you will probably have someone who will probably cement and be on top.
That is still happening. We will see who that person will be. It’s great to see a new era.»
