Auger-Aliassime admitted that Holger Rune’s aggressive approach was causing him big problems during their Paris Masters meeting and that was why he was unable to play his game against the Dane. Auger-Aliassime, who entered the Paris semifinal on a 16-match winning streak, had his streak coming to an end following a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Rune.
Just six days earlier, Auger-Aliassime defeated Rune in the Basel final. Rune broke Auger-Aliassime once in the first set and twice in the second set to complete a routine straight-set victory. «Credit to him, he played a much better game than in Basel, he was very aggressive without making mistakes.
Congratulations on keeping your game plan as good as you did. I haven’t played with many players that aggressive playing that hard, that deep, I couldn’t set my game plan on the court, feel good, play two or three good points in a row,» said Auger-Aliassime, per Tennis Majors.
Auger-Aliassime: Rune was aggressive and didn’t make many mistakes
Auger-Aliassime, hoping to win his fourth title in a row this week, admitted that Rune was simply too good and deservedly won the match.
«Obviously he wanted to correct last week’s final. It made me think about what I had to do. He wanted to be aggressive, but it’s not easy to do it when the score is not for you. His level + the stage did it too.» it’s difficult to me.
Last week I was good on my serve, very consistent. And I was able to take advantage of some mistakes from Holger. Today he was aggressive and kept the ball on the court. When he made any mistakes, it was rare, too late for me,» Auger-Aliassime added.
Although Auger-Aliassime lost to Rune, it was a very positive run in Paris. Now, Auger-Aliassime will focus on preparing for the ATP Finals.
