Caroline Garcia revealed that her «mind was going crazy» after losing the Monterrey final because she was «afraid to go to sleep.» On Sunday, top seed Garcia was outclassed by third seed Donna Vekic in the Monterrey final as the Croatian she defeated the Frenchwoman 6-4 3-6 7-5.
«Runner up in Monterrey @abiertognpseguros. This week was an inspiring week on and off the pitch. Really enjoyed every minute. Loved the positive vibes from Mexico.» García wrote on his Instagram shortly after losing in the Monterrey final.
But a few hours later, Garcia shared another message through his Instagram story. «Terribly tired, physically and mentally, I leave for the airport in 6h but I can’t fall asleep, I’m ‘afraid’ to go to sleep. My mind is going crazy.
Every time I turn off the lights and lay my head on the pillow, I can rewatch my match: that serve catching the lines at break point or that easy missed forehand or that poor call. Tennis can drive you a little crazy,» Garcia wrote on his Instagram story.
Garcia missed eight break points in the third set against Vekic
Vekic started the match much better as the Croat led 6-4 2-0. Down a set and a break, Garcia did not give up and responded by winning the next five games to overturn the deficit and take a 5-2 lead in the second set.
After serving for the second set in the ninth game, Garcia had four break points in the first game of the third set, but did not convert. In game seven, Garcia missed four more break points. Garcia paid the price for losing eight break points when Vekic broke it in game 12, when the Frenchwoman was serving to stay in the match.
«It was a crazy game until the end, [Garcia] he was playing so well, playing so deep. He was trying to earn as many points as he could. It was not easy, but I am very happy to win. It has been a great start to the year for me.
If the title hadn’t arrived now, I think it would have arrived sooner. So I’ve been playing some good tennis, and I just need to keep working hard and hopefully stay healthy, and I’m sure I’ll continue to have good results,» Vekic said after beating Garcia.
