Dominic Thiem admitted that he was «hugely disappointed» after failing to secure a single win for Austria in their Davis Cup qualifying tie against Croatia. Last weekend, Austria faced Croatia in Rijeka. On the opening day of the tie, Thiem suffered a 6-3, 7-6(2) loss to Borna Gojo.
The next day, Thiem was beaten by Borna Coric 7-6(3) 6-2. With Coric’s win over Thiem, Croatia sealed a 3-1 win over Austria. “It is a great disappointment. Obviously my match today, but also the fact that I couldn’t help but give my team, my country, a point.
We lost 1-3, I lost two points from that, so it’s not a good weekend for me, so the disappointment is big at the moment,» Thiem said after Austria’s defeat, according to the Davis Cup website.
Thiem failed to send the tie to a decider
The Austrians found themselves 2-0 against Croatia after the first day of the tie.
Then, in the doubles match, Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler stunned Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic to cut Austria’s deficit to 2-1. Thiem then had a chance to send the tie into a decider, but couldn’t deliver against Coric.
«There was a little glimmer of hope after the doubles, especially how the first set played out, but thanks to Borna. He kept his level throughout the match and it’s a well deserved win for Croatia.» said Austrian captain Jurgen Melzer.
Furthermore, Melzer admitted that they did not consider themselves the favorites against Croatia, but they hoped they could pull off a surprise win. «We were far from favorites, but you want to believe and put yourself in the position that a miracle can happen, but it didn’t.
That’s just the facts. We take care of them and go back to the drawing board for September and try to get back to that stage to improve next year,» added Melzer.
