World number 4 Daniil Medvedev defeated Jannik Sinner in Vienna, but spoke highly of the Italian afterwards. In the Vienna quarterfinals, No.1 seed Medvedev defeated sixth seed Sinner 6-4, 6-2. It was the fourth meeting between Medvedev and Sinner, as the Russian is now 4-0 against the Italian.
After continuing his perfect record against Sinner, Medvedev showed class and had nothing but praise for the Italian and his game. “Jannik is a great player and he can basically give anyone trouble. The last two Grand Slams, he played five sets with the [eventual] winner, so Jannik is a great player and today I am very happy with my performance.
I served surprisingly well, made almost no unforced errors, was solid behind the baseline. Everything worked well today and I am very happy about it,» Medvedev said after the match, according to the ATP website.
Medvedev eliminated Sinner in straight sets
Medvedev made the best possible start to the match, breaking Sinner in the first game of the match. In game nine, when Sinner was serving to stay in the first set, Medvedev lost his first set point as Sinner cut the deficit to 5-4.
However, missing his first set point didn’t affect Medvedev, who routinely served for the first set in game 10. After winning the first set, Medvedev broke Sinner twice in the second set to complete a straight-set victory.
Reflecting on his performance, Medvedev said that he was delighted with the way he performed against Sinner. “In general, the way I played today against Jannik is the same as in Astana. I am very happy, I have been looking for this level for a long, long time.
