Daniil Medvedev Reacts To Losing No. 1 Ranking

Daniil Medvedev reacts to losing No. 1 ranking

Daniil Medvedev admitted that he was disappointed after failing to defend his US Open title and losing the top ranking. On Sunday, Medvedev exited the US Open in the round of 16 after Nick Kyrgios handed him a 7-6 (11) 3-6 6-3 6-2 loss.

By losing in the last 16 of the US Open, Medvedev is guaranteed to lose his top ranking. Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud or Carlos Alcaraz will replace Medvedev in first place on Monday. Since Nadal lost in the last 16 of the US Open, Ruud and Alcaraz can now rise to the top spot by winning the title.

«When you lose at Grand Slam, look, I’m trying to look good here, but I’m disappointed,» Medvedev admitted. «(I’m) not going to cry in the room, but I’m a little disappointed. For a few days I’ll be a little sad.»

Yeah, it wasn’t the first thing that came to my mind walking up after the game and saying, ‘Damn, I’m not going to be number 1 in the world anymore.’ »

Medvedev prepares to fall in the classification

«Actually, I don’t know where I will be,» Medvedev added.

«Probably 3, 4. I guess Carlos will pass me. I don’t really know.» Furthermore, Medvedev said that he felt that he definitely should have served better against Kyrgios. Kyrgios was clinical on his break points against Medvedev as he realized 5 of 7 of his break point opportunities.

«Overall, I feel like if I take the match, the return wasn’t that bad,» Medvedev said. «I should have served a little better, which is not easy sometimes, I played a little better from the baseline, again, not easy, he played well.

I feel like in the comeback, it wasn’t a bad match for me.» Medvedev now has just one win and four losses against Kyrgios. After losing to Kyrgios at the Montreal Masters a month ago, Medvedev lost to Kyrgios for the second time during swing from this year’s North American Hard Court.
