Cori Gauff and Stan Wawrinka had no regrets after staying up late to watch the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the US Open. In the US Open quarterfinals, Alcaraz defeated Sinner 6-3 6-7(7) 6-7(0) 7-5 6-3. The match ended after five hours and 19 minutes of impressive action.
Also, the match broke the record for the last result in US Open history. Alcaraz saved a match point in the fourth set, before claiming a five-set win. «This game is crazy. I leave at 6am for the airport but I refuse to sleep and I miss this,» Gauff tweeted.
Wawrinka wrote: «How good is this match, Alcaraz-Sinner?»
Gauff, Wawrinka enjoyed the match Alcaraz and Sinner
After saving a match point and recovering from a break in the fifth set, Alcaraz admitted that even he did not know how he managed to pull off such a victory.
«I still don’t know how I did it. The level I played, the high quality of tennis. It’s unbelievable,» Alcaraz said. «I always say you have to believe in yourself all the time. Hope is the last thing you use. I believed in myself, in my game.»
While Alcaraz was speechless after his epic victory, Sinner admitted that it was tough to lose. «It’s not easy to talk now because I finished the match not long ago. But it was a good match from my side, from his side.
It could end in three sets, it could end in four sets, it could end in five sets. The level was high,» Sinner said. «At some point I didn’t serve that well, but he was returning well. It was a good match. Obviously the crowd was good.
For me only the second time in Ashe. So it was a good match for sure. But a very, very difficult one.» Alcaraz now plays Frances Tiafoe in the US Open semifinal.
