Coach Dmitry Tursunov described Emma Raducanu as a hard-working person, saying there was «no diva or superstar aura» about the 20-year-old Briton. Raducanu has been in the spotlight ever since she stunningly won the 2021 US Open as a qualifier.
But working with Raducanu, Tursunov felt that she was well-mannered, professional, and willing to listen and work hard. «Honestly, I didn’t see or feel like there was a lot of outside stuff going on. From the moment we started, Emma really had her nose to the ground.
She was a very hard worker and I didn’t see her skip many things. There was no diva or superstar aura about her and I think she’s been handling that part of her very well. I was very impressed with her and couldn’t be happier with her professional athlete form,» Tursunov told Sportskeeda.
Tursunov on Raducanu not defending his US Open title
Entering the 2022 US Open, many felt that Raducanu had very little chance of defending his title. Ultimately, Raducanu’s US Open title defense was short-lived, as the Brit suffered a first-round loss to Alize Cornet.
«Honestly, the expectations of her repeating were extremely unrealistic and anyone who understands anything about tennis would agree with that. It’s not because she doesn’t have the skills. She has the skill, but the game just needs to get better to have that.» . consistency to play at the highest level», explained Tursunov.
Tursunov, who began working with Raducanu shortly after Wimbledon, ended his relationship with the Briton and now works with Belinda Bencic. Although Tursunov and Raducanu no longer work together, the Russian coach only has positive words about the 20-year-old.
«From my perspective, I can only say positive things about her, the way she handled it, how professional she is for her age. I wish it was like that when she was playing,» Tursunov concluded.
