Andy Murray believes Emma Raducanu is on the mend and praised the 19-year-old for her performances in Cincinnati. In Cincinnati, Raducanu defeated two Grand Slam champions: Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka.
After beating Williams 6-4, 6-0, Raducanu thrashed Azarenka 6-0, 6-2. Raducanu’s Cincinnati campaign ended in the last 16 following a loss against Jessica Pegula. Murray said he thought Raducanu «played pretty well» in Cincinnati.
«I think he played really well last week,» Murray said. “I saw a couple of his games. I watched most of the match against Serena and then the Jessica Pegula match. Even though she lost that one, she’s playing much better.
The balls they use here help a lot, they are much lighter, the women’s ball. That allows him to get more on his shots, on his serves, he seems to have enjoyed the conditions last week. I figure if you’re fast here in New York you’ll enjoy them.
I hope he plays well next week.»
Murray on Williams retirement after this year’s US Open
Williams, who is ending her professional career after this year’s US Open, is just 1-3 since her season began at Wimbledon.
Williams is clearly past her prime and is not considered among the top favorites for the US Open title. But Murray feels Williams has nothing more to prove. “I don’t think what she achieves at the US Open doesn’t feel like history to me.
He has hardly played in recent years. Expectations for his career should be very low. Career celebrations for him should be very, very high. she’ll probably want this week to be about everything she’s accomplished, to have a really good send-off, more of a celebration instead of being really upset because it’s the end,» Murray said. Meanwhile, Murray plays Francisco Cerundolo in the US. USA Open first round.
