Former World No.1 Kim Clijsters described Iga Swiatek as «an incredible champion» after the Pole’s third Grand Slam triumph. In the US Open final, Swiatek defeated Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6(5) to lift his first US Open title and third Grand Slam title overall.
Swiatek, 21, is now 3/3 in Grand Slam finals. «An incredible achievement,» Clijsters told Eurosport. «She’s so young, I think we forget that sometimes. We see her so focused and dedicated, but she’s an incredible champion and she gave a great speech as well.»
It was very impressive. It’s just an amazing, amazing moment for her. She has what it takes to win many more times as a Grand Slam champion. For me, her greatest strength is her movement. She can recover so many balls and she did it today.»
Clijsters and Mats Wilander praise Swiatek
Swiatek, who turned 21 in May, is already a three-time Grand Slam champion and has been the most dominant player in the game this year. Reflecting on the future, Wilander says it will be difficult for the rest of the competition to stop Swiatek.
«The way she’s going and the pace at which she plays — she’s playing a different game. It’s a different level. She also looks so hungry all the time. So it’s going to be hard to slow her down.» The defense is absolutely incredible.
She is so energetic in everything she does and it shows once she is playing. Very few players are capable of doing what she is doing. She just looks comfortable as number 1 in the world and I don’t think that makes any difference to her.
She’s chasing something else all the time, and that’s getting better,» Wilander said. Swiatek didn’t play well before the US Open, but found her game when it mattered most. After winning the US Open, Swiatek admitted she faced «challenges» but staying focused on her goals was the key.
