Top-ranked Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner called Roger Federer «an inspiration» and wished him all the best in the next chapter of his life. Federer, 41, plans to retire from tennis after this year’s Laver Cup.
Sinner, 21, belongs to the generation that grew up watching Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic dominate the game. Now that Federer is retiring, 11th-ranked Sinner took a moment to pay tribute to the Swiss. Thank you @rogerfederer.
You are an inspiration to all of us. Good luck for everything to come!» Sinner tweeted.
Sinner reached three Grand Slam quarterfinals this year
After reaching Grand Slam quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, Sinner hoped to take another step at the US Open.
Unfortunately for Sinner, he missed out on reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open. In the US Open quarterfinals, Sinner was leading two sets to one and had a 5-3 lead in the fourth set against Alcaraz.
But Alcaraz saved a match point in the fourth set and recovered from a break in the fifth set to complete a 6-3 6-7 (7) 6-7 (0) 7-5 6-3 victory. «It’s not easy to talk now because I finished the match not long ago.
But it was a good game on my side, on his side. It could end in three sets, it could end in four sets, it could end in five sets. The level was high,» Sinner said after the loss. «At some point I didn’t serve that well, but he was returning well.
It was a good match. Obviously the crowd was good. For me only the second time in Ashe. So it was a good match for sure. But a very, very difficult one.» After the US Open, Sinner went to Bologna, where he helped Italy through the knockout stage of the Davis Cup Finals.
Now, Sinner hopes to help Italy win the Davis Cup final title when the knockout stage takes place in Malaga between November 23-27.
