World No.1 Iga Swiatek was pleased with how she responded after losing a set to Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open. On Thursday night in New York, Swiatek rallied from a set down to beat sixth-seeded Sabalenka 3-6 6-1 6-4.
«I felt a big difference between the first set and the last two,» Swiatek said after her comeback victory, according to the WTA website. «I’m really happy that I raised my energy level a bit. Aryna made it tough today for sure.»
I felt like she was serving pretty solid. It was difficult to come from behind in the third, but I’m very happy I did it.»
Swiatek: I just went all in after the first set
Swiatek struggled hard on serve in the opening set as Sabalenka broke pole three times to win the opening set.
After dropping the first set, Swiatek upped her game and broke Sabalenka three times to comfortably win the second set and send the match to a decider. In the fifth set, Sabalenka opened up an early 2-0 lead. Swiatek managed to get the break back, but Sabalenka broke again and led 4-2 in the first six games of the set.
Two games from losing the match, Swiatek claimed back-to-back breaks and won four games in a row to complete a comeback victory over Sabalenka. «I feel like Aryna served pretty well today, better than our other matches,» Swiatek said.
«[Losing the first two games of the third set] It helped me get back on the ground and realize that I still have high hopes even though the second set was pretty dominant. I just went with everything, you know. This time he actually gave me a lot, and the balls I played went in.
I’m quite happy because I feel like sometimes both of us took risks, because the pace was very, very high.» Swiatek plays Ons Jabeur in the US Open final.
