Elvira Pischmother of Boris Becker, revealed that he had only been allowed to call his son once since the day of his arrest. She explained to the British newspaper The Sun: «I can’t fly to Boris anymore. I can’t visit him in prison.»
This makes me very sad but it is inevitable. I have suffered a fractured femur and need crutches or a walker to be able to walk. Boris only called me once. It was Mother’s Day in Germany. He told me that things are going well and that I don’t have to worry about him.»
During the Wimbledon tournament, John McEnroe wanted to send Becker a message over the BBC’s microphones: «Boris, we love you. We all miss you, mate.» Novak Djokovic, who has been coached by Becker for about three years, has also shown his support for his family.
«I consider Boris a member of my family, he is someone I have always respected. We have shared many incredible moments. It breaks my heart to see what he is going through, I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for his family.»
Boris Becker has been serving his two and a half year sentence in London since the end of April. The former German champion had been accused of bankruptcy by the London court, the Bankruptcy Court, due to a heavy debt of about 6 million dollars that he could no longer pay.
The case involved a debt contracted years ago by Becker with the private bank Arbuthnot Latham & Co and other lenders. Attempts to pay off the debt by mortgaging various real estate properties, notably one in Mallorca, proved futile.
Becker was unable to pay the installment plan fees to the lenders, who obviously decided to sue him. After a lengthy trial, the Southwark magistrate finally decided to jail Becker for 30 months. The German will serve half the sentence in prison and the rest of the detention period in semi-liberty.
