F1 superstar Lewis Hamilton took a moment before Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix to pay tribute to Serena Williams. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, ended her amazing run at this year’s US Open.
Hamilton, considered one of the greatest drivers in F1 history, described Williams as one of the most inspiring athletes in the history of the sport. «I’m taking a moment before today’s race to show my appreciation and gratitude to the greatest of all time, @serenawilliams.
We will never see another Serena. She is unique. She came in like a wrecking ball and has been so spectacular to watch. She has such ferocity, power and strength in both body and mind. To be so bold, black, courageous and most of all a kind and caring human being is beautiful,» Hamilton wrote on Instagram.
Hamilton to Williams: You inspire me every day
Before Hamilton became an F1 superstar, he used to watch Serena and Venus Williams on TV. Today, Hamilton is good friends with the Williams sisters. «I remember seeing her and Venus in her first games with my dad on TV,» Hamilton added.
«Seeing such talented women dominate a field where no one looked like them gave me hope. They made me believe that superheroes are real and that they can look like me and my family. I never dreamed in a million years that I would meet these heroes and would come.» to call them my friends.
I knew I wasn’t alone thanks to you. I knew I could never give up because you didn’t. I can’t thank you both enough. Still today you remind me to never give up, you remind me of what we stand for and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.
You make me want to be better in every way. A better competitor, a better brother, a better friend and a better leader. You inspire me every day and I just know that you always have a brother in me. Serena, I wish you all the happiness in what follows for you.
You really deserve it.»
This week, Williams named Hamilton when asked to reveal his list of GOAT athletes. Meanwhile, Hamilton finished fourth at the Dutch Grand Prix.
